Christmas stockings to sew

Photo from Vanilla Joy
Recently I came upon a very well-done tutorial for handmade Christmas stockings at Vanilla Joy.  I doubt I will be sewing more stockings at this point in time, but you never know.

Mr. T and I used to fill stockings for one another (mine is my original Christmas stocking from the 1950s,  and his is one I got him sometime after we got married), but in recent years we decided to forego even the stocking stuffers and just put any money we would have spent toward overnight getaways during the year.  That's more meaningful to both of us.

All that to say, I will probably have no need to make any more Christmas stockings unless it is just for decorative purposes, or possibly as gifts. (I do crochet a stocking for each new grandchild.)  Yet these are so cute,  and I could have such fun with fabric combinations!

If you happen to be in the market for some new stockings for your family, or to gift to others, this tutorial: Christmas Stocking Tutorial looks like a good one.  Happy crafting!

  1. I've always wanted new stockings but my daughter is against it... she wants her old stocking, has more meaning to her. I crocheted one for me a few years back and finally gave it to mom because she wanted it.

    1. Oh, that is funny, Lucie. I do think you could make as many new stockings as you like, just for decorating nooks and crannies around the house.

It's sweet that your daughter wants her old stocking and also that you gave your crocheted one to your mom. I say, make all the new ones you want and just use them for decorating or for gifts -- a set of stockings would make a great wedding or shower gift, for example.

  2. Wonderful stockings!! For the past 10 years or so, I decided not to buy gifts for each other for holidays and other occasions. We but what we want during the year and have a little cash fund for that instead..

    1. Thanks, Deb! Yes, it works out well to not buy gifts for each other and use the money for things you both really want. It's worked out very well for us.

Yes, your posts on the Spirit of Christmas books were very helpful to me. The Christmas books I really can't resist are the Leisure Arts Gooseberry Patch series, but I do have some of the Spirit of Christmas books too. Your posts will help me decide which of them I "need". Thanks for sharing!

  3. I keep thinking about making stockings but the instructions intimidate me. One of these years I will get brave. :)

    1. Go for it, Carrie! There are certain projects -- one of them is the superhero capes I've made for our grandkids -- that the instructions intimidate me, too, every single time. I have to stop and think it through and sometimes even ask my hubby for engineering advice, and eventually it works. You can make stockings, I'm sure of it!

  4. I started to cross stitch a stocking when I was pregnant with Sophia and finished it just in time for her first Christmas. I don't think she would consider using anything else. Vic and I use velour stockings that I bought for the entire family when we went to England in 2003. I keep thinking about the line in your post that says you "forgo even the stocking stuffers and just put any money we would have spent toward overnight getaways during the year". This sounds like a great idea but I'm going to put a twist on it. I'm going to plan 12 dates/overnight getaways and put everything we need for each one in an envelope. I'll work on it starting in January and put the 12 envelopes in our stockings. Then on Christmas Day, we will have a whole year's worth of fun ahead of us.

    1. Pamela, that is an absolutely amazing idea! Thanks for sharing it! Those envelopes will be so much fun to open on Christmas morning.
