Another lovely Christmas poem: "Lo! The Light!"

Every year I like to feature a few poems during Christmas in July.  Having a number of vintage Ideals Christmas magazines in my possession makes finding suitable poems a rather delightful task.  Here is the poem I have chosen for today, by Elizabeth Landeweer:

Lo! The Light!

Above the manger stood a star,
A star all wondrous white:
And all about His lowly bed
There welled a flood of light.

It bathed the stable in its glow;
It shone round Mary's head.
And on the kneeling shepherds' cloaks
Its radiant beams were shed.

Star of the world!  Through time and space
It flames in glory bright
To make man's pathway through the years
A pilgrimage of light.

It shines for us -- that light still shines!
No cloud can dim its spark;
Its radiance blossoms bright with joy,
A beacon in the dark.

The path leads on, the path leads up;
We walk it mile by mile,
And lo!  The light His love has lit
Grows brighter all the while.

Oh, never doubt it shines for  you,
Though skies seem dark and low.
Keep looking up, keep lifted up --
Somewhere a star will show!

Let not your heart be trouble-filled.
The darkest night must clear,
And life be glad and life be sweet,
For lo!  The light is here!

~ Elizabeth Landeweer

I enjoyed this poem so much!   I especially was blessed by the thought that the path leads onward and upward and that while we walk it mile by mile, God's light grows brighter -- even when "skies seem dark and low".

(The image at the top of the post is a vintage Christmas card from my Etsy shop.   I thought it fit well with the poem, although of course I realize that the wise men were not actually at the stable.)

  2. I've been thinking of the term "pilgrimage of light" since you shared this. What a lovely and apt description of our journey through this life towards our Savior.

    1. It really is. It reminds me of the verse that tells us God has called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light!
